Energy Efficiency
in Commercial Buildings

Presented by Richard Tesoriero, P.E.

Commercial buildings account for nearly 20% of primary energy consumption in the United States and use 36% of the nation’s electricity. Over the last few decades, a significant amount of effort has gone into improving the efficiency of existing buildings as well as optimizing the design of new buildings. Improving the energy efficiency of commercial buildings can directly impact the health and comfort of building occupants, the bottom line of building owners, and the utilization of natural resources within the country.

This program addresses major topics related to energy efficiency in commercial buildings including the operation of existing equipment, high performance building management practices, and what it takes to make buildings “green”. Through the use of case studies, attendees will be introduced to the key concepts of energy efficient design, operation and maintenance of large commercial buildings. Emphasis will be placed on current industry standards and the tools used for various phases in the life cycle of a building.

After completing this full day session, attendees will be able to benchmark the energy performance of existing commercial buildings using the Environmental Protection Agency’s Portfolio Manager tool and apply ASHRAE level I,II, and III energy audits to evaluate energy saving retrofits. Attendees will also learn how to evaluate the design of new green buildings using current energy codes, energy modeling standards, commissioning, and standards for the measurement and verification of energy savings.
