How to Design Cost Effective Green Buildings

Presented by John A. Boecker, AIA

NOTE: 8.0 PDHs

Looking to design LEED® projects that cost less? This intense full day program teaches how. The session will examine how the integrative design process can produce green buildings that cost less to build than conventional construction. It will cover integrative design from its conceptual underpinnings to actual case studies, including a step-by-step process for implementing this approach. The workshop begins by looking at natural systems as a model for whole systems thinking. Following this conceptual overview, we will review case studies from constructed projects. This is followed by a description of how to define project intentions and integrate them after defining the basic elements of integrative design. The Presenter will also include an examination of how to move beyond a mere mental mode to embrace systems thinking. This includes an examination of moving beyond green buildings toward restorative and regenerative design.

A step-by-step outline will be presented of how to implement the integrative design process from the proposal and pre-design phases through construction, delivery and operations phases, and conclude with a case study of how to neutralize first costs, while achieving high performance and integrating LEED credits. Much of the course content is derived from The Integrative Design Guide to Green Building: Redefining the Practice of Sustainability, a ground-breaking book co-authored by the presenter, published in 2009.

After completing this intense 8 hour program, attendees should be able to apply the concepts behind integrative design and demonstrate the benefits of an integrative process. Participants will learn to incorporate integrative design strategies and implement the basic elements and steps of an integrative design process.
