Water-Based Fire
Protection Systems
in the New York City Fire Code

This seminar will cover the requirements of the 2008 New York City Fire Code with regard to water-based fire protection systems. Topics will include automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire pumps, alternative automatic fire-extinguisher systems, fire department connections, and the inspection, testing and maintenance of these fire protection systems.

Local modifications to the national standards will also be discussed (i.e. NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20 and NFPA 25). Changes to the specific occupancy requirements will be included (i.e. Educational, Mercantile, Residential and Storage Occupancies). Appendix Q to the code will also be discussed.

Participants can expect to gain knowledge of hydraulic requirements, occupancy threshold requirements and proper procedures to ensure the systems and components are ready for service. By the end of the session, attendees will have a greater understanding on the new 2008 edition of the New York City Fire Code requirements.

Kevin Kelly, PE..

Kevin Kelly, PE. is a Fire Protection Engineer and serves as Consultant for the National Fire Sprinkler Association located in New York. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. degree in Fire Protection Engineering and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New York.

Mr. Kelly has taught technical seminars on topics related to fire protection systems. In addition, he has served on several NFPA technical committees including NFPA 14, Standard for the Installation of Standpipes and NFPA 24, Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains. Mr. Kelly participates in the International Code Council’s model code development and is the chair of the Fire Protection Committee for the American Water Works Association.

Programs are 8:30am to 4:00pm and include lunch.
